B11: Here, you can view the pseudostratified epithelium in the epididymis. Note the very long STEREOCILIA extending from the apical surfaces of the columnar cells. These are not true cilia, but instead are long microvilli. Stereocilia are seen only in epithelia in the epididymis and the vas deferens of the male reproductive tract. They function to increase the surface area, since these organs are responsible for substantial fluid secretion and resorption. On image B11 you can clearly distinguish the TERMINAL BARS between each of the columnar cells. These represent the tight junctional complexes "sealing" the epithelium. Note that you do not see BASAL BODIES in the apical cytoplasm. Basal bodies anchor cilia and flagella; their absence tells you that the stereocilia are not real cilia at all.
